There are plenty of good PEO options, just depends what you are looking for. 1) Workers Comp - some PEO specialize in higher risk (BBSI, CoAdvantage) whereas most other PEOs typically focus on lower risk clients. Depending on the PEO, some will charge a %-based admin fee and bundle WC fees, making it hard to decipher what you're paying. 2) SUI - depends on the PEO, but most PEOs will report according to each state whether they are "PEO-Reporting" (using PEO EIN for SUI) or "Client-Reporting" (using Client's EIN for SUI). There are a few situations like you shared, where a PEO will charge higher with their SUI. 3) You can definitely find more competitive pricing on admin fee, but generally admin fees are increasing across all PEOs. Helping other Justworks clients I have seen competitive benefits until year 2 or high utilization, then renewal costs will be significantly higher. PM me if you have any other questions.

My husband owns a small business and we’re struggling to find a health insurance plan that actually meets our family’s needs. We’re a family of 5 and were quoted about **$65,000/year** last year for an EPO plan that had **no out-of-network benefits**. Unfortunately, **my husband and I both have ongoing mental health providers who are out-of-network**, and continuity of care is extremely important to us. The business is very small: there are only **2 families and 1 individual** who would need coverage. The rest of the employees are either on Medicare or covered through a spouse’s plan. We looked into **Justworks**, but we don’t meet their 40% participation requirement. We’re located in New Jersey. Has anyone found: PPO plans with meaningful out-of-network mental health coverage? PEOs or small business health insurance options that work with very small groups? Any alternatives to Justworks? Level-funded or self-funded plans that make sense for a group this small? At this point, I’m less concerned about finding the absolute cheapest premium and more concerned about maintaining access to established mental health providers without paying entirely out of pocket. If you’ve navigated something similar as a small business owner, especially in New Jersey, I’d love to hear what worked (or didn’t work) for you. Thank you!

Has anyone found a good alternative to JustWorks from a PEO standpoint (with healthcare as well)? I'm talking to Nurial and they seem to have a more cost effective solution but I have yet to see if their healthcare can compete with JustWorks (which seems to be the big benefit of JW in most competitive situations). We have 11 W2s and 8 1099's. Right now places where JW really stinks: 1) Workers Comp - Charging me $550 per month when this should be \~$100. They require us to be on their workers comp. 2) SUI - Charging \~7% when this should be \~3-4% 3) Admin fee per W2 is $109 (which is supposed to go up to $124 next year) But the healthcare premiums are so low on JW, it seems nobody makes the shift. Let me know of some PEO's that you've moved to because the costs have been better (aside from Nurial which I am talking to).

I’m an Account Executive here at Justworks and I talk to founders navigating this exact PEO vs. Payroll crossroads every single day. That "accounting messy or clean" question is usually the tipping point for most small businesses. The short answer is that it stays incredibly clean through automated journal entries, but the real math comes down to your headcount and how many states your employees live in. I’d love to help you model out the cost-benefit of a PEO vs. standard payroll for your specific team size and footprint—no high-pressure pitch, just an honest look at the numbers and compliance reality to see if it's actually overkill for you right now. Do you have 10 minutes later this week for a quick introductory chat?

stupid message length limit, anyway they also often dont have networking the way steam network does. This was a huge issue in the early days of stuff like epic. I remember getting satisfactory when it first released. i just could not join my friend in MP no matter what we did. I am a sysadmin by trade it was not a ports issue, it just refused to work. Refunded the game, waited for its steam release, got it there, click join friend and it #justworks. Thats why people use steam

Justworks. All day long. This is the right decision for a company this size.

JustWorks will work, they’ll take a 13-person company. We are a PEO designed for companies as small as 1-person. Cheaper monthly fees, equivalent Master Plan national carrier policies, higher service with us because we’re designed for the small company size r/essentl_peo

ADP sucksssss, heavy on the admin fees, nothing works great. I really like justworks, its simple easy to use, has a lot of partner you can add on if you need like performance reviews or 401k, great support. I think you need more requirements on what your looking for to really narrow down the search like if your planning on hiring just in the states or international? Not every HRSI is a certified PEO so it's hard compared apples to apples without requirements.

In this commercial for the HR platform JustWorks there is a remote employee who is on a laptop named Tomás. I don't know why, but he looks so familiar to me, but no matter how much I search I can't figure out who he is. https://youtu.be/JFmq2FSfFOw?si=Fgu\_nPUf7TI\_zepz

Squint is a fast growing startup in SF. Not explicit, but I’d assume 60+ hour work weeks. Justworks is a mature HR tech company. Employees can check out at 5 pm and not think about work on nights and weekends.

damn that poland role looks interesting but those numbers seem way off compared to US salaries 🤔 been thinking about making a switch from mechanical work to something more tech-focused and gtm engineering keeps popping up on my radar. the salary ranges are all over place though - like how does squint justify paying almost double what justworks offers for same role? guess location and company size makes huge difference but still wild to see that gap. might have to check out that full list and see what remote options look like since i'm not ready to relocate yet 💀

Don't have a good experience with Paychex. Depends how many people you have in HR and Payroll that can manage complex systems and how big your employee head count is: < 300, Justworks or Gusto. Over: Rippling or Workday. Larger, complex, robust system requirements: ADP

Nope. You made that up. You're a very dishonest person. It doesn't, "all go back" anywhere. Learn how the MTA is funded (I provided a detailed breakdown already). The 0.11% [Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax](https://help.justworks.com/hc/en-us/articles/360004473272-Metropolitan-Commuter-Transportation-Mobility-Tax-MCTMT#h_01HDPTC6TRYE8YCWQP690TD3AB) is not paid by working people. No one is, "hosing" anyone. This was a cost of living increase to keep with inflation. This was not a raise. The PBC said under oath at the PEB hearings they can afford the raises and refused to say it would increase fares. You're stumping for big business and rentiers. Why, I don't know. Because their taxes aren't changing either.

Background checks operate through third party companies that collect the information from various primary reporting sources. For example they use The Work Number (owned by Equifax) to get employer history. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) governs it and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is the oversight agency. TWN has a file on all of us. They get their data through agreements with companies like ADP or other third parties who provide payroll services. If your bf startup handles payroll with a third party then you need to know if they report to TWN. Companies like Justworks is another payroll provider but they do not report. Some background checks get a report and as long as enough of the entries match they send it to the client. If the client wants further confirmation, then the background check company calls the numbers listed to ask the given org’s HR. This is where your bf will need his folks to be ready to lie for you. If he is a small org and answers all calls himself he just needs to know what to say and be prepared to do it. There’s also the option of you being asked to provide W-2 or paystubs to verify it for yourself. They rarely ask for more than one confirmation. I leave you with this information to draw your own conclusions. Most of the comments here are advising you based on morality and ethics. Those are valid points. But I hadn’t seen any explaining how this process actually works. For me, I make better decisions when I know how the process works to know what the boundaries limit or make possible. After that, I can make decisions based on the ethics and morality. Hope that helps

I run a company with JustWorks and have wondered why more people don’t do this. You don’t even need to draw a salary as the owner- you can have the company pay 100% of the premium for unpaid owners without affecting contribution percentages, and you can probably be pretty creative on the 2nd employee to get coverage.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is it possible to create an LLC and use a PEO (eg Trinet or Justworks) for the LLC and get the medical coverage through the PEO? PEO costs for a single person company should be very low.
comment r/fatFIRE u/3-6-9-12-15 2026-05-08
Is this easy to do? Say I find a friend in same boat as me for insurance. I create an llc for investing. We each put in say 500k and invest in sp500. Dividends are the total employee payroll. Now,voila, we can get better health plans thru justworks or something similar? Im in NY.
comment r/fatFIRE u/LogicX 2026-05-08
Sorry, what threshold? Not a thing in my state. I literally pay myself nothing as an employee. I just have to cover justworks and health benefits costs. Yeah you could probably have yourself and spouse as the two employees.
comment r/fatFIRE u/LogicX 2026-05-08
I just started my own LLC to manage my investments, then I use justworks for my PEO and use their benefits for myself and one other 'employee' (my spiritual mentor) who I pay and also provide them with benefits. Two person minimum achieved, and now I have the best healthcare benefits money can buy in the US. I do pay almost $1000/mo/person for this, zero deductible. Worth it for my health issues.

Hey guys, I have an interview with just works I made it past the screening and testing and now I had a 2 hour interview on zoom with multiple people. Does anyone have any idea what they would ask on the 2 hour call? It’s for a customer support specialist role in payroll. Any comments on the work environment and how it is to work for Justworks?

If you liked Rippling, you should look at Justworks as well. And if integrating is the main concern, both of those companies have a PEO product as well where everything comes as part of the product. Makes administration a bit easier. I have experience with both... happy to chat

I’ve used JustWorks at two separate companies and oversaw the migrations to that platform and had a very positive experience both times. The implementation specialists were on top of it, no surprises and communicated well. Really like our customer success rep as well, she’s been super helpful since we went live on the platform. We transitioned off of Deel this last time and we had quite a few tax issues that needed to be cleaned up and JW was very helpful as we navigated that.

HR Director here with 120+ employees. We’re currently looking at bamboo HR or Rippling. Rippling has gone out of their way to get their quote down comparable to bamboo. So we’re seriously considering them. We currently use bamboo for applicant tracking and absolutely love it. At that level of employees, you might want to consider a PEO. I would suggest JustWorks and definitely stay away from TriNet.

We are a very small startup and registered to do business in Texas. We would like to hire ONE person at an hourly wage doing executive level work (basically we would like to compensate one of the founders for the hours they put in weekly but it's not full time work so an hourly wage is acceptable to all involved). I'm having a tough time researching what the right way to pay this person is. Justworks and similar companies require a minimum number of employees and we don't meet their minimums. Based on the work being done it looks like legall we have to hire on a W2 and not a 1099. So I guess my questions are * has anyone run into this problem before * What's the right way to do this * What solution did you use? * I'm assuming just paying this person by venmo is a bad thing to do * I need some guidance here. Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide some insight.

Hi OP. Sorry, can’t find anything more recent about Justworks here. Just wanted to ask, does it take 1 week each time you get paid? I just started with a new client and it’s my first time getting paid via Justworks. Based on my research there’s no definite date to expect your payment, it’s always just a date range. Is it true?

Many small companies outsource this work now to companies like TriNet, justworks or Remote. There are others as well. I worked at a 40 person company all My HR paperwork was done through a portal and the owners wife handled a few things. I never really would go to the owners wife if I had issues given her relationship, etc. lots of companies operate without formal HR these days.

Has anyone had luck with L1A with a EOR like justworks or deel get approved? My employer is American, I am Canadian living in Canada. We use justworks for payroll and all EOR requirements. I have been on payroll for 2+ years and looking to get L1A and move to USA. On top of this we acquired a Canadian company in September so we do have established canadian status. I'll be applying as functioning manager but also will have some direct reports in USA. Thanks

If you are looking for a peo I liked justworks. You could do both contractors and employees with benefits. It was 99 per person for employees. I dont remember the rate for contractors.
comment r/Payroll u/CrabEffective4636 2026-04-20
tried gusto for six months and hit the same scaling wall you're describing. moved to rippling which was better for integrations but the support felt like talking to a chatbot half the time. justworks had cleaner onboarding but their contractor pricing made no sense for our mix. outsail's interface is tricky but at least their fee structure doesn't change every quarter. honestly nothing in this space feels designed for companies under 50 people, we're all just picking the least annoying option.

If you're CA-only on the W2 side, Wagepoint, Knit, and Payworks are the three you should actually be looking at, not Gusto/Rippling/Justworks. Those three are US-first and the CA support is bolted on. The harder question is the contractor mix. Once you have a real contractor cohort the answer changes a lot, because most of those tools price contractors as if they were employees and the math gets ugly fast

I’m an ob/gyn. 24-30 days is mildly irregular— but that’s not in itself an indication for hormonal therapy. Have you ever been screened for PCOS? If so, then you should be using something for endometrial protection (women with PCOS are at risk of anaemia and endometrial cancer, amongst other things). As you are 18 years old, you absolutely have the right to decide on what you want to do with your body! That said, if you need a solution that minimizes wait gain, look into drosperinone based contraception or a levonorgestrel containing IUD, like a Mirena or Kyleena. A lot of my AFAB trans patients love the Mirena because there’s very minimal systemic impact, it lasts for up to 5 years, and a lot of people will stop bleeding altogether. There are multiple types of combined oral contraceptives, all with different types of estrogen and progesterone combinations. You may find a different formulation justworks better for you. Obviously, I don’t know your story or your medical history— so please don’t this as me siding with your mom! I just see a lot of patients who have no idea what their options are, and doctors don’t always take their symptoms seriously. I just wanted to reach out and let you know there are alternatives to oral (systemic) contraception. Definitely discuss the situation (and whether or not you actually need hormonal therapy) with your doctor. Tell them you are being bullied, and ask them for help. A good gynecologist or GP can help you decide what to do, and educate your mother (with your permission!).

If you have previous paystub you can check to see if the math adds up or if its an error on w2. If you confirm its an error on w2 than ask previous place of employment to send corrected w2. Regardless if its w2 error or error with too much money being withheld, they have to update the payroll on their end and provide you a corrected w2. If any money if owned to you than it will go through the irs back to you and not rhough your previous job. You should be contacting the person or company in charge of payroll. I assume they using a 3rd party company like justworks or adp etc. It should tell you on your w2 who they using.

My wife is selling her company and the buyers are hiring her back as a 1099 employee. She started an S-corp to get the tax advantages (her previous company that she's selling was also an S-corp). What's the best and cheapest payroll software for this situation? She won't need HR, on-boarding, benefits or any other services, just payroll. Her accountant recommended Gusto, but I've also see others like OnPay, Justworks, HiBob, etc. Are any of these better for her situation than any other one? Seems like pricing is about the same for all of them. Thanks!

Not legal advice: yes you live in a red state so I can imagine the idea of havin to come under the thumb of the regulations of a blue state is discouraging for a Tennessee firm. Your going to need to be bringing in enough revenue to justify the expenses of compliance with the state of Illinois. Also I would recommend you avoid committing tax fraud to try to dodge the Illinois regulations. See the ai slop response below from Google. I currently live and work for a company based out of Nashville, TN. I'm originally from Springfield, IL and will be moving back to Illinois later this month. I was approved by upper management to go fully remote and keep my position for my company that is based out of Nashville. In the midst of our move, my HR director discovered that my company does not meet the benefits required by Illinois for remote work. In order to "meet" those benefits, they would have to extend them to remaining 1000 employees and the incurred cost would not make sense. I'm still unaware of the specific benefits that are being requested. This was news to my boss and the company as a whole. As of now, they're telling me there is not a viable option to keep me with the company once I move. I have to imagine there is a way to work around this? Would love to speak with someone that is well-versed in Illinois / Tennessee remote work regulations. I'll be traveling back to TN monthly for this position, and I'm floating the idea of "renting" a coworker's room to keep a TN address. We will be purchasing a home in Springfield, IL however, and I'm not sure the impact of what is considered my primary residence. Any help is much appreciated as I navigate this tough +9 This is a complex, but not uncommon, scenario in the modern remote work landscape. Moving from Tennessee (a state with no income tax and fewer employer-mandated benefits) to Illinois (a state with stringent employee protections) creates a "nexus" issue, meaning your company suddenly becomes subject to Illinois labor laws.  ADP ADP  +1 Here is a breakdown of the regulatory issues and potential workarounds, based on Illinois/Tennessee remote work regulations. 1. Why Illinois is a Challenge for TN Employers Illinois is known for having strict, pro-employee remote work laws. When you work from Illinois, your employer must comply with them, regardless of where they are headquartered.  Expense Reimbursement: Illinois law requires employers to reimburse employees for "all necessary expenditures or losses incurred within the employee's scope of employment," such as home internet, phone, and office supplies. Paid Leave: Illinois requires one hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked, up to 40 hours per year, which can be used for any reason. Workers' Compensation: The company must have workers' compensation insurance that covers employees in Illinois. Unemployment Insurance: The company must pay into the Illinois Unemployment Insurance (UI) fund for your wages. Tax Withholding: The company must register to withhold Illinois state income tax, which is different from Tennessee's tax-free status.  The Core Issue: HR is likely correct that complying with these for one employee requires setting up payroll and compliance for the state of Illinois, which makes them feel they must offer these perks to all 1000 employees. 2. Potential Workarounds Independent Contractor (1099) Status: The most common work-around is moving from a W-2 employee to an independent contractor (1099). As a contractor, you are responsible for your own benefits, tax withholdings, and insurance. The company no longer has to comply with Illinois employment laws. Risk: This requires you to handle taxes, it removes company benefits, and you must meet the IRS definition of a contractor (i.e., you control how you do your work). Employer of Record (EOR) Service: Your company could hire a third-party service like ADP, Justworks, or TriNet to act as your "employer" in Illinois. The EOR handles IL compliance, taxes, and benefits, while you continue doing your work for the TN company. Third-Party Logistics/Staffing Agency: Similar to an EOR, the company could employ you through a staffing agency that has an Illinois entity.  Reddit Reddit  +1 3. Regarding the "Address" Idea (Renting a Room) Using a coworker's room to maintain a TN address while actually living and buying a house in Illinois is risky and generally not recommended. Legality: This can be construed as tax evasion. Domicile vs. Residence: Illinois defines a resident as someone who is in the state for other than a temporary purpose, or someone who is domiciled there. If you buy a house, get an Illinois driver’s license, and move your family, you are an Illinois resident. Tax Implications: As an Illinois resident, you owe Illinois tax on all income, regardless of where the employer is located. Employer Audits: If you have an accident, need to claim workers' compensation, or if the company is audited, the fraud will be discovered. This can lead to termination of employment and legal issues.  TurboTax Support TurboTax Support  +3 4. Navigating the Conversation with HR Since you are visiting Tennessee monthly, you can make the argument that your work is "incidental" to Tennessee, but if you are working from Illinois for more than 30 days a year, this argument usually fails.  4 Day Week Jobs 4 Day Week Jobs  +1 Your best route is to propose solutions that limit their cost: Ask if you can look into an Employer of Record and present the cost to them. Suggest a 1099 contractor arrangement for the remainder of the year to see if it works. Request to speak directly with their outside legal counsel or their payroll provider (e.g., ADP), as they often have solutions for these exact scenarios.  Disclaimer: I am an AI, not an attorney or tax professional. Given the potential legal and tax liabilities, it is highly recommended you consult with an Illinois employment attorney or a CPA specializing in multi-state taxation.

Dooo not go with gusto. I switched from them a little over a year ago and never looked back. Screwed up my tax filings and payroll resulting in $$$ of fines and a lien. I switched to Justworks and it was the best decision for my small company. Customer service has been excellent. Happy to refer if you’re interested in hearing them out!

I helped a friend get set up with Justworks when he launched his business. He pays $8 per employee per month plus $50 fee. So for you that would be $138/month. Significantly less. He raved about their customer service. I have heard nothing but great things about them from a lot of small businesses. Happy to connect you with someone to have the conversation if you want. Probably a good idea to check your existing contract to see if you are paying for things you are not using. If they are generally doing a good job and you haven't had issues downgrading may be easier than moving to a new provider.

Look at PEO's. They will offer w2/contractors in US and many offer international payments. They also have quickbooks synch available. Will get you workers comp, medical, dental, life, and 401k. Take a look at justworks or trinet. They make things easy. There many others, and their offerings should be similar.
