I'm building a drift detection feature that compares Terraform source against live Azure state, no committed tfstate file required. Most small Azure shops we've talked to don't commit their state — they keep it in an Azure Storage backend, sometimes a local laptop, sometimes not really anywhere — and we wanted a path that didn't require "first, set up a blob container" before they get any value. That worked fine for the easy stuff. Where it bit us was here: resource "azurerm_postgresql_flexible_server" "main" { name = "twoops-dev-pg" sku_name = var.sku_name } # variables.tf variable "sku_name" { default = "Basic" } Azure says `Standard_B1ms`. Our parser resolves `var.sku_name` to its default `"Basic"`. Comparator goes "expected Basic, actual Standard, that's drift" and emits a finding. The remediation pipeline opens a PR: - sku_name = var.sku_name + sku_name = "Standard_B1ms" Two things wrong with that PR. First, "Basic" probably isn't what Terraform would actually apply. There's almost certainly a tfvars or a -var in CI overriding the default. We don't see it without state. So the "expected vs actual" is a guess at best. Second, even if "Basic" WAS the source of truth, the patch is worse than no patch. Replacing the variable reference with a literal silently destroys the indirection. Anything else referencing `var.sku_name` keeps using "Basic", the variable becomes orphaned, and three weeks later someone wonders why their tfvars override stopped working on this one resource. I shipped that PR before we caught it. Yeah. So we made two changes. The parser now keeps a separate set of "this property's raw HCL was a variable/local/module reference" keys per resource. The comparator skips those keys entirely when producing findings. For properties we don't have enough context on: we don't surface them at all. Most resources have a mix of literal and variable-driven properties, and the literal ones still produce real drift signal, so we're not losing much. The remediation generator also got a guard for the case where a finding sneaks through anyway (older stored rows, value shapes the scan-side filter misses). It refuses to auto-patch and shows the operator something like: The IaC sets `sku_name` via `var.sku_name`. Auto-patching would replace the reference with a literal and silently break the indirection. Update the variable's default in variables.tf, or set it in your tfvars, and the drift will resolve on the next scan. We never replace `var.X` / `local.X` / `module.X` / `${...}` with a literal value. Instead, we return the file unchanged if that's the only viable patch. Stuff we're still figuring out: Tfstate would solve all of this. We know. The pitch for "no state file required" has friction tradeoffs and this is one of them. Worth it for the "five-minute setup" test, but I'd be curious if anyone's tried both approaches and has opinions on where the line should be? Nested blocks like `identity { ... }` are the next thing we suppress to avoid noise. Real drift inside those blocks hides right now. Per-resource-type schema awareness is the right fix and also a never-ending maintenance project. Module composition is its own rabbit hole. Findings get emitted against the child module's resource block, but the actual fix lives in the PARENT's `module "foo" { }` block where the inputs get set. Walking back up to patch the parent is on the list. How are other people handling the variable-driven finding case? Things we considered and ruled out: * Refuse to emit any finding without state. Loses too much real drift signal — most resources are mostly literal-property and produce useful findings. * Mark variable-driven findings as "low-confidence" instead of suppressing. Operators don't actually read severity gradients in practice — they treat any finding as "fix this." * Read .tfvars files in the repo. We do this, helps a bit, but doesn't cover CI-time `-var` or env-specific tfvars stored outside the repo. I'm leaning towards the full suppression for variable-driven properties for now. There's a difference in additional insured and additional NAMED insured. You don't want to list them as additional NAMED insured. You don't NEED to list them as additional NAMED and absolutely no agent should add a landlord as additional NAMED insured under a tenant's policy. Named insured is who owns the policy basically. Who the carrier is protecting, whose "stuff" is covered. On a personal policy this is you. Or you and a spouse if you're married, or whatever the "ownership" interest is in what you are covering. Named insured has first party benefits under the policy.  Your landlord does not own your stuff. They do not own YOU. Therefore they do not have an interest that would need them listed as NAMED insured. The landlord has no first party interest in the policy. Liability is coverage for injury you are responsible for to a THIRD PARTY. And injury does not just mean physical injury to another human. Injury can be property damage. It COULD be bodily harm to another person. The key thing is it's covering the harm/damage/injury YOU are negligent for/legally responsible for and cause to a separate party. Liability does not pay YOU. it pays to defend you and to pay on your behalf. It is a third party coverage.  Now, you could damage the landlord's property and they could come against you as a claimant for damages you caused to their property. In that case, they are a third party and you are the responsible one, so your policy makes them whole. However, the landlord could also find themselves on the receiving end of a lawsuit due to your actions. Because they own the property so the usual jargon is along the lines of the owner had a duty to maintain a safe premises and knew or should have known that a dangerous condition was created by you/whatever you did and that as a result the landlord violated their duty of care to the injured person or person's property. By agreeing to rent to you the landlord takes on the responsibility of basically vouching for you to the general public that they felt you could be trusted to uphold public safety. I know that sounds like...nonsense to an extent but that's the way the lawsuits are phrased. It's a lot of wringing of hands about the total dereliction of duty to not cause undue harm to your fellow human - very "THINK OF THE CHILDREN". What additional insured does is says if the landlord gets called into a claim because they made the decision to rent to you and therefore had a legal obligation for essentially vouching for you -  your policy will pay to defend the landlord under your policy for damages YOU caused to another uninterested third party, because the only reason the landlord is being sued is because of you and the policy protects you. Let's use for example: you were an absolute monster who had a garden gnome on your door step and someone tripped over it and broke their ankle. The landlord should have known your gnome posed a "real and serious danger to public" and should have done something to rectify your blatant disregard for others by having a decorative gnome out. So the landlord gets sued for owning the property and renting to you. But it was your gnome - you should have known better, the landlord didn't put it there. So since it was your actions that directly caused the injury, and the landlord is being sued as a direct result of your actions, your policy would pay to defend the landlord for their responsibility in the claim since you caused it.  It's just an extension of liability coverage to a third party interest who conceivably could be called in/held liable as well in claims caused by you.  It does not give them the same coverage as being a named insured. It's an incidental coverage - if you didn't cause the injury/aren't the primary negligent party, it's not going to do anything. At the end of the day it has to stem from "you".  In personal lines, the "additional interest" is GENERALLY the same as additional insured - it's just that personal lines policies are primarily property driven/property losses and property is first party - so the nuances of liability often get lost, as well as the semantics of named insured vs additional insured vs additional named insured. The tracking reports so many of these stories are based on make clear that if it behaves as a usual fan driven property then the $80 million is accurate since they tend to have a lot of advanced sales. But if it behaves like a family driven film it will have mostly walk up business and those predictions will be off. I tend to think with Grogu you’re going to see it work like a family film. Remember when you sell a film to a middle aged nerd you sell one ticket. When you sell a kid the film you sell 2-5 r tickets as it becomes a family event. I think the opening will be $100-120m with a total of around $800-900m. But if it is good the sky is the limit.

If this quote by the city manager in the C-ville weekly is correct he didn't consider all of the choice. “I have only two choices: increase in revenue or decrease in expenses.” Left out that the city is already seeing an increase in tax revenue from the land value increase that came from increased density and resulting revenue. It also ignores increase value of buildings as massive apartments replace more appropriately sized development in or adjacent to residential neighborhoods. This after back-to-back years of speculator-driven property value increases. Blaming collective bargaining would only be accurate if we had not already begun to improve salaries and benefits for workers because we had to for competitive reasons. Or is the city admitting it hasn't been paying competitively for years even with these increases. The two cent increase in the rate needs to be considered in light of the rate it would be to maintain current revenue giving increase values. The city can't tax its way to affordability.
