Crypto.com Card

I've been splitting spending between two cards for a few months. Crypto.com card for most things because the cashback is real and the UX is honestly fine, and a Gnosis card for when I feel like paying straight from my own wallet. Mostly curiosity, not ideology. Self-custody UX is still clunky enough that I never really felt the difference. Saturday morning I'm at a bakery and the Crypto.com card declines once, then goes through on the second tap. Five seconds of mild panic, normal stuff. Walked out and looked at the app, no issue flagged, balance fine, transaction fine. Probably the terminal. But then I'm walking and the thought lands that during those five seconds I had basically no idea what state my money was in. I had a balance on a screen and an app I trust to be telling me the truth. If that decline had been a soft freeze on their end while they ran some compliance check, my "balance" wouldn't have actually been mine, and I'd have no recourse other than waiting for an email reply. The screen number isn't custody. It's a claim against the platform. Used the Gnosis card at the next place and the mechanics of it are still worse. Pre-funded, slower to top up, more steps. But the screen number is just a view of what's actually in the wallet. Same number whether the app is open or not. The thing I keep getting stuck on is that the marketing pitch for self-custodial cards always leans on "no KYC" or "censorship resistance" or whatever, and that's not really true. I went through full KYC for the Gnosis one. Same forms, same wait. The actual benefit is much smaller and much more boring, which is that between transactions the money is sitting in a wallet I control, not in their float. For something as mundane as a bakery run that distinction sounds pedantic. After the five seconds of staring at a declined screen with no information, it doesn't. Still using the Crypto.com card for most things to be honest. The UX gap is real. Just don't think I'll be able to look at that balance number the same way again.

Then instead of addressing the failed delivery, support started bringing up the fact that my **billing/KYC residential address** is different from my **delivery address**. My KYC/residential address was already successfully verified, so identity verification clearly wasn’t the issue. I requested delivery to my workplace for practical reasons, which is very normal. I’ve used other crypto card platforms before, and delivering to a work address has never been an issue. My main complaint is: 1. Why was I repeatedly told to “wait” for over 30 days? 2. Been looking into the Crypto.com cards and trying to figure out what actually makes more sense long-term. You’ve basically got two options: Pay \~£24.99/month for the “no stake” version (same-ish perks) Or stake around £4k worth of CRO to unlock the higher tier On paper the staking option looks better because you avoid the monthly fee and get similar rewards (cashback, Spotify/Netflix etc). But then your money is locked and tied to CRO price which can go up or down. If you use the normal crypto.com app it's all your own fault. This app is shiny and designed for newbies or people who don't really want to inform themselves about crypto at all besides investing. Also the normal crypto.com app is for the visa card. Besides that as a crypto Degen just use the exchange from crypto.com and you will get way better pricing. But you need to know what you do. It's actually pretty nice that they offer 3 apps. I don't get the crypto.com bashing all the time.

This happens with different vendors and different browsers. And the card does work for direct payments or vendors like Amazon, where it was already registered. I want to share a case so others can be careful. I purchased a vehicle VIN report from a website called [https://checkcar.vin](https://checkcar.vin). The page advertised a **single report for which** I paid with my [Crypto.com](http://Crypto.com) card and completed the OTP authentication. A few days later I noticed a **€59.99 charge** from the same merchant that I never knowingly agreed to, occuring 7 days after the original purchase. There was **no clear indication during checkout** that a recurring subscription would be activated. The company behind the website is: [Checkcar.vin](http://Checkcar.vin), UAB Registration code: 306368706 Švitrigailos g. 11K-109 Vilnius, Lithuania This is a Lithuanian company with one employee according to the Lithuanian registry. What happened next: • I contacted the merchant – 0 response • Phone number listed on their site does not work • I opened a dispute through [Crypto.com](http://Crypto.com) with all this, but they have been absolutely of no help and with little to zero experience on EU consumer protection laws. The response from [Crypto.com](http://Crypto.com) support is that because the payment was **3DS/OTP authenticated**, they consider the €59.99 transaction authorized and cannot treat it as fraud. However under **EU consumer protection law** this is not correct: Directive 2011/83/EU (Consumer Rights Directive) requires **clear and explicit consent for recurring payments**. Directive 2005/29/EC prohibits **misleading commercial practices**, including hidden subscription traps. OTP authentication only confirms the cardholder approved a payment request, not that the merchant's billing practice is lawful. At this point: • €59.99 remains unresolved • complaints have been filed with Lithuanian consumer authorities Has anyone else experienced similar hidden subscription charges from websites or had better success with [Crypto.com](http://Crypto.com) disputes? Posting this mainly to warn others.

That’s actually a really interesting experience to hear. I think people enter crypto in very different ways. Some get into DeFi quickly, others just don’t feel the interest yet.
